Chittagong City Corporation-led delivery of Primary Health Care

Chittagong is the only city corporation (CCC)in Bangladesh where the local government tried to implement delivery services of primary health care. Throughout other parts of Bangladesh, delivery of primary health care is usually contracted out to NGOs on a competitive basis. In CCC, the local government had the resources and capacity to carry out this task, thus CUEH explored the approaches applied by the CCC in community mobilisation at the national level. This study took place from September – October 2013.

Key findings: Opportunities for community mobilisation was limited in the government layout, and attempts at sustainability were not fully explored with project activities coming to an almost standstill when project funds expired. There still remain opportunities to further understand how community led efforts that result in immediate gains can be scaled up.
