MEP Admission

Application Information

Candidates from any part of Bangladesh are welcome. However, young women from disadvantaged and indigenous communities will be given priority. After passing HSC exam, girls students have to appear in the Government central admission test examination of "Midwifery" ( www.bnmc.gov.bd). Those who will pass the exam with minimum 40 marks are eligible to admit any midwifery Institute.

Admission requirements

For the written admission test

  1. Young women who have completed 12 years of education (up to HSC or equivalent) either in science, arts or commerce with GPA 6.0
  2. A minimum of 2.5 GPA, in both HSC and SSC level are eligible for the written admission test. After successful completion of the written exam they appear for Viva.

Viva board will look at the applicant's attitude, knowledge level, economic capacity, health status and Commitment to complete the three-year course and work as a professionally practicing midwife afterwards

Graduation requirements

  1. 40 Normal Vaginal Delivery (NVD)
  2. 40 Newborn Care
  3. 100 Antenatal and Postnatal Care
  4. 25 Family Planning method acceptance

Tuition

The 3-year residential 'Diploma in Midwifery' will cost 298,000 BDT and is a subsidized cost. The Developing Midwives Project has kept provision for at least 30 percent of the seats to be filled by students from the disadvantaged populations in each Academic Sites, throughout the project period. Please note that tuition free will not be the same each year.

Free Studentship and Areas of Consideration

For full free studentship the Project will consider those people who represent the following:

  1. Low-income group i.e. wage labor, rickshaw pulling etc. and earn maximum monthly BDT 6000.00 and ownership of maximum 33 decimal lands.
  2. People from hard to‐reach areas, disaster prone areas, haor and isolated areas and the areas of poor infrastructural facility are also considered for offering this opportunity.
  3. The indigenous peoples of the Chittagong Hill Tracts, Sylhet Division, Rajshahi Division and Rangpur Division and Mymensingh District

Facilities

  1. Hostel facilities: All the hostels are well equipped and have standard arrangement for food, living and study. Balanced diet is served at the dormitories following a standard diet chart to fulfill the required calorie requirements during studentship period. The housekeeper also stays at the hostel and it has 24*7 security surveillance system.
  2. Classroom facilities: Midwifery has air-conditioned spacious classrooms with multimedia facilities.
  3. Skill lab, Computer labs and libraries: All academic sites have standard skill labs in line with International Confederation of Midwives (ICM)standards and also computer labs with high speed internet connectivity. Skill labs and computer labs are accessible for all students, 9 am to 10 pm.
  4. Clinical placement: Midwifery program has MOU with a number of clinical facilities for providing space for all the students to practice skills. These include government teaching hospitals/institutes and Partners’ hospitals and clinics and few private clinics. During clinical skill practice, all the students are accompanied 24/7 by faculty members. Transport facilities are available to and from the clinical placement sites.
  5. Day Care Center: Day Care Center is really very essential for any mothers specially working mothers. 30% of the faculty members have been pregnant at one point of time and others have children below 2 years of age. The midwifery program inaugurated a day care center for our faculty so that they can enjoy their motherhood as well as child rights can be ensured.

Student Leadership & Development

We present students with a variety of programs, organizations and opportunities that inspire them to get involved and grow into the leaders of tomorrow. Each academic site leader is elected by student voting from each batch.

At the beginning of each semester newly elected Student Leaders from all academic sites receive a residential training on “Excelling Effective Leadership”. The training allows them to be more confident and skilled to play the roles at their respective academic site and this way they are able to play a vital role in maintaining a healthy learning environment. This training program will also bring the opportunity for them to meet other leaders from different sites, exchange ideas and execute them in their own premises.

Student Welfare Committee (SWC)

The welfare of its students is of paramount importance to the Developing Midwifery Project (DMP), BRAC University. The crucial responsibility of Student Welfare Committee (SWC) is to assist students with any problem they may be experiencing, be it physical, mental, social, academic or otherwise. The SWC looks after the welfare of the students with the support of teachers and management. The SWC intended on providing the most suitable academic, social and cultural environment to bring out the best from each individual student. A VOICE BOX is maintained in the academic site where any students can write their problem anonymously. Student Welfare Committee (SWC) meetings take place once in every month and the meeting is presided by a student leader.

Counseling Services

The counseling unit of MEP is managed by a counselor, who is a mental health professional and has extensive knowledge on the physical, mental & social well being of adolescent and young adults. Counselor facilitates workshops on several topics such as Self-Care, Coping, Bullying Stress Management, Genders Based Violence etc. to raise awareness, explore the problems that the students face and try to understand their troubles and support them as required. Counselor maintains a Hotline Service offered by DMP and via this service students can reach out to the Counselor 24*7 regarding any critical feedback as well. Also, there is an Anonymous Email platform maintained by counselors for students to share their feedback and concerns.
