ARISE researcher presented at the Prince Mahidol Award Conference (PMAC) 2024
Wafa Alam, Research Fellow, attended the Prince Mahidol Award Conference (PMAC 2024), held in Bangkok, Thailand from 22 to 27 January 2024. The theme for this year’s conference was “Geopolitics, Human Security and Health Equity in an Era of Polycrises”. Wafa presented two posters from ARISE at the conference under the sub-theme “Decolonising Global Health”. At this roundtable held on 28 November 2023, researchers shared findings from a study on the nature of misogyny on social media. 34 participants from activist and NGO networks, academia, and the media attended the discussion which aimed to foster an engaging discussion on understanding the nature of backlash in the digital environment and critically reflect on how to collectively strategise ways to counter it.

The Centre for Gender and Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (CGSRHR), jointly with the Oroddho Foundation, organised an Art Exhibition titled "Canvas of Change: Youth perspectives on the rights of Structurally Silenced Women" under the Our Voices, Our Futures (OVOF) project. The exhibition, held on 18-19 August 2023, showcased the youth's perspectives on the rights of structurally silenced women through artwork by 10 young artists aged 15 to 19.

Researchers held a five-day South-Asian regional writing workshop from 24 to 29 September 2023 in collaboration with HERD International, Nepal as part of capacity strengthening for CHORUS project. A certificate giving ceremony for “Pathways to Equitable Healthy Cities: Public Engagement on Waste Management and Waterlogging” was held on 20 September 2023. More than 350 students from nine different schools were awarded certificates for their exemplary participation in awareness raising activities on Waste Management and Waterlogging in the community from January to May in 2023.

Midwifery Education Programme (MEP) at BRAC JPGSPH observed World Breastfeeding Week from 1 to 7 August 2023 with cancer awareness activities, poster presentations, and free health check-ups. The students learned about breast and cervical cancer from a participatory workshop, and prepared posters and health education materials. They also visited the local communities to deliver free health check-ups to pregnant women and other individuals on 8 August 2023.

The Centre of Excellence for Non-Communicable Diseases and Nutrition (CNCDN) held a dissemination seminar on 31 August 2023 to share findings from the study titled ‘Strengthening Surveillance of Non communicable Diseases and Their Risk Factors in Bangladesh’. The objectives of the study were to strengthen NCD surveillance systems in Bangladesh and to continue longitudinal follow-up of the participants recruited to ascertain fatal and non-fatal NCD outcomes and thereby enabling the quantification of NCD risk relationships, including identifying and evaluating disease biomarkers.

From 23 to 27 July 2023, the Midwifery Education Programme organised a Faculty Development Training. 42 Midwifery Teachers from 20 different Private Midwifery Institutes of Bangladesh participated in the training. The training put emphasis on updating the midwifery education, curriculum, exam procedure and practice of midwifery skills research and evidence based care in midwifery, management of post-partum haemorrhage, eclampsia awareness and management, helping babies breathe (neonatal resuscitation), Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR), promotion of respectful maternity care, mental health first aid and orientation on the Bangladesh midwifery society etc.

On 27 July 2023, the student counsellor organised a group counselling session at Dhaka Centre of the Midwifery Education Programme (MEP). 38 students of 10th batch attended the session. The purpose of this session was to increase students' awareness about the concept of a safe academic environment, how to solve common student problems, and the process of creating a safe environment.

Training of primary health care providers from Upazila health complex of Birganj, Parbatipur, and Chirirbandar on using SIMPLE apps took place at the district hospital meeting room, Dinajpur, on 11 July 2023 as a part of the project titled "Evaluation of strengthening of key NCD services by NCD management model in three sub-districts of one border based district in Bangladesh". Civil surgeon Dinajpur chaired the session. Facilitators from the National Heart Foundation, Dhaka, facilitated the session.

On 4 May 2023, the Students Counsellor arranged a group counselling session at the Dhaka Centre of the Midwifery Education Programme (MEP) with the students of 9th batch. Progressive muscular relaxation, a deep relaxation technique was applied to speak up and release stress and anxiety of the Midwifery students which helped them to let go of some of their life struggles and enabled them to deal with their problems in a better way. The Student Counsellor helped the students to identify positive experiences of the past week, and any problems faced by the students and suggested suitable solutions to those problems.

Supported by Guttmacher Institute and in partnership with the Association for Prevention of Septic Abortion, Bangladesh (BAPSA), this workshop facilitated discussion on the findings, methodology, challenges, and limitations of the study, as well as future probable projects, sexual and reproductive health.
