By following this guideline, we can ensure clarity, consistency, and alignment of expectations among BRAC James P Grant School of Public Health (BRAC JPGSPH), BRAC University, the intern, and all relevant stakeholders.

Objectives of this Internship Programme

The overall objective of BRAC JPGSPH’s internship programme is to develop a skilled and competent future workforce by providing hands-on experience, fostering professional growth, and enhancing the capacity of young professionals to contribute effectively to public health.

Interns gain practical experience by working on real-world projects, bridging the gap between academic knowledge and professional practice. This enhances technical and interpersonal skills essential for career success.

Eligibility and Requirements

BRAC JPGSPH welcomes candidates who are passionate about learning and make a meaningful contribution to the field of public health. We believe that an educational background or prior professional experience is not a barrier to opportunities.

Our eligibility criteria are intentionally flexible, ensuring that individuals from diverse academic and professional backgrounds can apply. We value curiosity, commitment, and willingness to engage in real-world public health challenges, making this internship accessible to all motivated candidates who are eager to grow and contribute.

The primary requirements for the internship Programme are:

  • Aged 18 years or above
  • Proficiency in English or Bangla (both written and spoken)
  • At least 12 years of schooling
  • Currently enrolled in a PhD program (national or international) and pursuing a thesis at a host institution
  • OR currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program at a college or university
  • OR possessing field experience in public health
  • OR demonstrating a strong interest in or willingness to work in public health

The CVs of the applicants will be screened, shortlisted, and forwarded to the head of each center.

Roles and Responsibilities of Internship Coordinator

The Internship Coordinator plays a crucial role in managing the internship programme by serving as the primary point of contact for candidates and ensuring a smooth application and onboarding process. The key responsibilities include the following.

  • Point of Contact: Acting as the main liaison for candidate inquiries, FAQs, and application-related assistance.
  • Application Management: Receiving and reviewing CVs, ensuring that all applications are properly documented.
  • Guidance and Support: Assisting candidates throughout the application and selection processes.
  • Coordination: Collaborating with the focal person from the center to facilitate intern placement and engagement.

Roles and Responsibilities of Designated Center Representative

The Designated Center Representative is responsible for overseeing interns' engagement within the center and ensuring that their tasks are well-structured and aligned with the objectives of the project or center. Key responsibilities include:

  • Workplan: Preparing a thorough work plan with the intern for the duration of their internship programme, clearly outlining expectations and goals for the entire internship period.
  • Task Allocation: Assigning tasks based on interns’ skills and the center’s needs.
  • Supervision: Monitoring interns’ activities, providing guidance, and ensuring meaningful participation.
  • Coordination: Acting as a bridge between interns and other staff members to facilitate smooth collaboration.
  • Performance Oversight: Tracking interns’ progress and providing feedback to enhance their learning experience.
  • Problem-solving: Addressing any issues or challenges interns may face during their tenure.
  • Collection of Report: Ensuring that interns submit their midterm and final reports on time. The Designated Center Representative is responsible for reviewing these reports, providing feedback, and ensuring that they align with the objectives and tasks completed during the internship.
  • Networking Opportunity: Providing interns with opportunities to connect with professionals within the center, other departments, and external partners, helping them build a professional network that supports their career development and enhances their learning experience.

Roles and Responsibilities of Interns

Interns are encouraged to-

  • Share Critical Insights: Share critical insights about their field experience (if any), as well as the technical aspects learned from the programme.
  • Keep a Work Log: Keep a log of their work to record reflections throughout the internship.
  • Reflect on Research Experience: Reflect on barriers and facilitators encountered during the research and share their overall impression of the internship.
  • Sign Nondisclosure Agreement: Sign a nondisclosure agreement to maintain the confidentiality of sensitive information encountered during the internship.
  • Follow Code of Conduct: Adhere to the organization’s code of conduct, maintaining professional behavior, punctuality, and respect for confidentiality.

Compensation and Benefits

The internship program at BRAC JPGSPH is free of cost. Interns may receive a monthly honorarium if their assigned project has funds available. However, regardless of funding availability, all interns will be reimbursed for travel, accommodation, and other expenses incurred during field visits. They are also entitled to the following benefits:

  • Certification: Interns will receive certificates and an appreciation letter from the Dean of the School upon successful completion of the internship.
